Division Chief Executive Officer & President
E.J. Kuiper, MHA, DPT, FACHE
Division Chief Executive Officer & President
E.J. began his career in health care in 1991 as a physical therapist in the Netherlands before moving to the United States. He now leads the CID team from the division headquarters in Springfield, Illinois. He joined HSHS in January 2014 after serving as president and CEO of St. Anthony's Health System in Alton, Illinois. Prior to joining St Anthony's, E.J. was chief operating officer of the 400-bed Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center in Fort Myers, Florida, and was part of the HCA Executive Development Program in Nashville, Tennessee. He received his MHA from Florida Gulf Coast University and a clinical doctorate in physical therapy from the University of St. Augustine in Florida. In addition, E.J. is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives.

 

Division Chief Financial Officer
Steve Umland, CPA, MBA
Division Chief Financial Officer
Steve oversees the financial, accounting, revenue cycle and other operational aspects of the four hospitals in HSHS’s largest division. Prior to joining HSHS in January 2015, he was the senior vice president of finance at Ohio Health, based in Columbus, Ohio, and the CFO at Ministry Health Care, a Catholic health system located in Wisconsin and Minnesota. He is a CPA and past chapter president of the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s Wisconsin Chapter. Steve has a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

 

Division Chief Financial Officer
Michelle P. Clatfelter, JD
Vice President, Legal Affairs
Michelle, who serves as Vice President Legal Affairs, HSHS Central Illinois Division, and Associate General Counsel for HSHS, joined HSHS CID in August of 2013. Prior to joining HSHS CID, Michelle spent several years practicing in the health law practice group of the Springfield-based law firm of Sorling Northrup Attorneys. 

Michelle received her Juris Doctorate and Health Law Certificate from Saint Louis University School of Law in May 2009. While in law school, Michelle was a Lead Editor on the Journal of Health Law & Policy. Prior to law school, Michelle spent three years working as a writer and research analyst for the Illinois Senate. 

Originally from Peoria, Michelle and her husband, Trevor, reside in Sherman with their three children, Harrison, Adeline and Theodore.  Outside of her legal service, Michelle also serves on the Board of Directors for SPARC in Springfield.

 

Division Chief Financial Officer
Julie Goebel, MHA
Division Vice President, Strategy Development & Implementation
Julie leads the development of strategy for the Central Illinois Division, working closely with each local hospital to identify and implement initiatives that support regional growth and collaboration.  Julie’s career in health care strategy began in 1999 at Southern Illinois Healthcare, a multi-hospital not-for-profit health system based in Carbondale, Illinois.  After relocating to Springfield, Julie joined St. John’s Hospital as the Director of Planning.  She has since enjoyed a 16 year relationship with Hospital Sisters Health System, having been involved in Strategy at the hospital, System, and Division levels at various points in her career.  Julie holds a bachelor’s degree in Community Health from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a masters in Health Administration from Saint Louis University.
