St. Elizabeth's Hospital
It was a humble beginning for a hospital in 1875–a small schoolhouse in Belleville, Illinois, 20 miles east of St. Louis. Today, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is recognized as the oldest and one of the largest healthcare providers in its area offering specialized services that are vital to its community. Many are unique to southern Illinois.
The special services include a homelike Mother Child Center with a special care unit for high-risk premature babies; an occupational therapy program dedicated to helping those with voice problems; an accredited sleep disorders center; a dedicated unit for those who struggle with addiction and mental health problems; and an accredited medical rehab center for victims of a stroke and traumatic injury. The hospital is also home to Southern Illinois Heart Institute, which offers a wide range of cardiac diagnostics and offices of the area’s largest cardiology physician group. St. Elizabeth’s cardiology program offers extensive services—from sophisticated diagnostics to open-heart surgery to comprehensive rehabilitation. St. Elizabeth’s is a certified Chest Pain Center.
To reach out to surrounding communities and increase people’s access to healthcare, the hospital established outpatient facilities in neighboring cities offering diagnostic tests, therapy, and physician offices. St. Elizabeth’s provides a geriatric nurse to the local center for older adults, offers frequent free community education programs and health screenings, and sponsors over sixteen support groups. St. Elizabeth’s also offers an Occupational Medicine program directly serving many of the employers in the area.
St. Elizabeth’s is a sponsor of and an important resource for the St. Louis University Belleville Family Practice Residency Program, a partnership between one of the nation’s leading medical schools and nearby Scott Air Force Base.
After more than a century of growth, the vision and mission of the founding Sisters have continued to inspire St. Elizabeth’s employees and staff – to minister to those in need of healthcare, especially the poor . . . in an atmosphere of love, compassion, and competence, with a reverence for life.
