St. Mary's Hospital - Streator, IL
In 1887, three Franciscan Sisters arrived in Streator at the request of the area’s residents. They began caring for the sick and the needy. Within a year, the Sisters had built a hospital.
By providing the highest quality of care and an organization-wide commitment, St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Mary’s Home Health achieved accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. This voluntary accreditation is a result of the hospital’s demonstrated compliance with the Joint Commission’s nationally recognized health care standards.
St. Mary’s Hospital offers the most advanced medical technology with a full array of acute care services. It also offers community programs that educate, train, and support more than 50,000 residents. These programs are customized to meet specific needs, such as childbirth education classes, safe sitter classes, and cancer support groups.
The Sisters’ success is attributed to their mission to continue “Christ’s healing ministry.” After more than a century, times have certainly changed. However, the healthcare needs of the community have not. St. Mary’s Hospital continues to walk in the footsteps of Christ and their founding Sisters, providing the highest quality of care to the communities of the Illinois Valley.
St. Mary’s administration, medical staff, employees and volunteers will continue to identify with the core values of the Hospital Sisters Health System – Respect, Care, Competence and Joy. They will actively demonstrate the century-old philosophy of its founding Franciscan Sisters – care and concern for the whole person in mind, body, and spirit.
