Slip-and-fall injuries due to icy conditions are a common occurrence during winter months. To prevent injury, consider the following tips from HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital.

  1. Walk like a penguin. Waddle and keep your center of gravity over your front leg. Raise your arms slightly for balance, keep your hands out of your pockets and your feet pointed slightly apart.

  1. Wear shoes or boots with traction. Walk slowly.

  2. Be careful when entering or exiting a vehicle. Use the vehicle for support.

  3. Assume that all surfaces are slippery.

  4. Stay on designated pathways that have been treated.

  5. Apply salt or sand to slippery surfaces, but keep in mind that salt will only melt if the temperature is 20 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer.

“We see various injuries due to weather related conditions in the emergency department,” said Mike Queary, RN, BSN, emergency department manager. “If you don’t have to be out during a winter storm, please stay home and stay safe.”
