Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day Is October 16

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Plastic Surgery Foundation will recognize the eighth annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day on October 16. Plastic Surgeon Mitchell Brown, MD, started BRA Day in Canada in 2011, and it is now observed every year on the third Wednesday in October.

“Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day began as a way to make women who have had or need mastectomy or lumpectomy aware of their options when it comes to reconstructive surgery,” said Kevin Calder, MD, FRCSC, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at HSHS Medical Group Multispecialty Care – Effingham. “Although there are a number of breast cancer awareness campaigns in the United States, not many are dedicated to educating women about their breast reconstruction options.”

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy or lumpectomy is a personal choice, but one goal of Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day is to inform women who are candidates for reconstruction of their options.
