HSHS Medical Group Opens New Medicare Clinic

HSHS Medical Group Medicare Clinic is the first of its kind in the area and provides comprehensive health care featuring longer appointment times, chronic disease care and medication management as well as onsite lab and x-ray.

“Our new Medicare Clinic is dedicated to providing patient-first care to our Medicare population and those aging into Medicare,” said Melinda Clark, HSHS Medical Group chief executive officer. “COVID has taught us that this age group requires coordinated care for the best possible outcomes. Our new clinic redesigns the health care experience with the unique needs of this age group in mind. We have assembled an outstanding team of experienced providers to deliver that care.”

The comprehensive care team includes two physicians, a pharmacist, nurses, social worker and care coordinators. In addition to traditional health care, the team also helps patients navigate the complexities of Medicare plans.

The physician leaders of this exclusive clinic are familiar faces in the community and have transitioned their existing practices to devote themselves to the Medicare population.

Alfred Harney, MD, internal medicine, received his medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He completed an internal medicine residency and endocrinology and metabolism fellowship at University of Illinois Hospitals in Chicago.

“I am excited for this opportunity to transform the health care experience. Longer appointments and access to a comprehensive care team translate to better outcomes,” said Dr. Harney.

Valerie Thompson, MD, family medicine, earned her medical degree and completed a family medicine residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois.

“Medicare coverage is confusing for patients, and this new clinic will provide a supportive team well equipped to help navigate patients and ensure they maximize their Medicare benefits to achieve the best possible health,” Dr. Thompson said.
