Thanksgiving is a time for many to travel to be with loved ones and enjoy delicious food such as turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and more.  With Thanksgiving less than a week away, HSHS Medical Group is providing tips for you to stay safe this Thanksgiving holiday with your travel and cooking plans.

If traveling, HSHS Medical Group encourages the following for drivers:

  • Check the weather.  Before you depart, check the weather along your route and plan accordingly.
  • Stay alert.  Drivers should be well rested, giving their full attention to the road.  Make frequent stops, and if the trip is long, rotate drivers, if possible.  Don’t use cell phones while driving.
  • Follow the rules of the road.  Observe the speed limit, don’t follow another vehicle too closely, use your headlights when appropriate, and use caution in work zones.

For those who are cooking this Thanksgiving holiday, follow these safety tips:

  • Be aware of fire hazards while cooking.  Don’t wear loose clothing while cooking that could catch fire, never leave the stove unattended, and keep anything that could catch fire – oven mitts, pot holders, wooden utensils, food packaging – away from the stove or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.  Consider purchasing a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen.
  • Use a timer as a reminder that the stove or oven is on.  Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the house to ensure that all appliances have been turned off.
  • Check food regularly and observe food safety protocols.  Make sure that you do not under- or over-cook the food you’re preparing.  Be mindful of any raw meat or other food that you are handling to prevent any food-contamination or illness.
