Cold and flu cases are at their peak over the next few months. While the flu can be an inconvenience for healthy people, it can be more serious for young children, the elderly or those with asthma, respiratory illness or chronic health conditions. See below for our top tips to stay healthy this flu season.
If you do get sick – remember HSHS Anytime Care is available 24/7 during the holiday period.

Healthy Holiday Tips

  • Wash your hands - Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

  • Avoid spreading germs - Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw away the tissue and then wash your hands. Keep your hands away from your mouth and eyes to avoid infection.

  • Get a flu shot - Flu vaccinations are the most reliable form of protection against certain strains of the flu virus. It takes up to two weeks for the flu vaccine to provide full immunity. The flu season can last through to April and beyond so it’s not too late to get your shot!

  • Stay home when you’re sick - Stop the spread of colds and flu by staying home when you’re sick. If possible, stay home from the onset of your symptoms until 24 hours after your fever is gone. If this is not possible, stay at least 3 feet away from other people and avoid meetings, gatherings or other group events until you are better.

  • Clean frequently touched surfaces - The flu virus can remain on surfaces for up to 48 hours. Use soap and water, a bleach-based solution or disinfectant with an “EPA approved” label to wipe down surfaces and remove the flu virus.
