HSHS today announced the appointment of Joan Coffman to serve as President and CEO of HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, IL. Mrs. Coffman currently serves as President and CEO of HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls, WI. She will begin her new role on September 5, 2017.
“I look forward to partnering with St. Mary’s colleagues, medical staff, volunteers, the hospital Board of Directors and the entire Central Illinois Division as we serve the Decatur community and surrounding area,” Mrs. Coffman said. “The rich Franciscan heritage of HSHS, and its continued commitment to the mission and values of the Sisters played a major part in my decision to join HSHS over nine years ago. I am grateful for this opportunity to continue my service with the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis and join the talented team at St. Mary’s Hospital.”
During her tenure over the past decade as both COO and CEO of SJCF, Joan has demonstrated exceptional leadership working with colleagues to deliver high quality,
Franciscan inspired care. Under her direction, SJCF has been recognized as a top performer by such organizations as The Joint Commission, Press Ganey, Leap Frog, and Wisconsin Forward. Mrs. Coffman has supervised more than $15 million in capital improvements, developed new physician partnerships, and engaged with community partners to improve health and wellness. She also actively participates in health care advocacy and received the American Hospital Association’s 2017 Grassroots Champion award.

Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, Mrs. Coffman worked with Tenet Healthcare Corporation as Assistant Administrator of Lindy Boggs Medical Center in New Orleans until 2005 when it closed due to flood damage sustained in Hurricane Katrina. She joined HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls in 2008, and has been President & CEO since March of 2010. She holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of New Orleans and is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
