Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Procedure (TAVR)

Prairie Heart Institute at HSHS St. John’s Hospital was the first hospital in downstate Illinois to perform this visionary alternative to open-heart surgery in individuals who need a diseased heart valve replaced. In fact, Prairie physicians performed a double TAVR procedure in January 2016 - replacing two aortic valves at the same time.

Laser Lead Extractions

For patients with pacemakers, laser lead extraction offers a less invasive, more effective way to extract the device’s wires (or leads).

EP Ablations

During this advanced procedure to treat heart arrhythmia, an electrode catheter is used to cauterize the area of the heart causing the rhythm abnormalities.

WATCHMAN™ Procedure

Watchman™ is an umbrella-shaped filter about the size of a quarter. It is used to replace blood thinners in patients with atrial fibrillation.

MitraClip

MitraClip is used to treat mitral valve regurgitation in patients who are not candidates for open-heart surgery.

Micra Pacemaker

The Micra pacemaker is placed in the heart via a vein in the leg, so there is no chest incision, scar or bump. It is completely self-contained within the heart and 93% smaller than conventional pacemakers, or about the size of a large vitamin capsule.

Our faculty are pioneers in the innovation and development of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the treatment of vascular and structural heart disease. All vascular physicians are active investigators in multiple clinical trials.

Research performed at
Prairie Research and Education Cooperative (PERC) strengthens Prairie physicians' ability to have access to the most advanced treatments before the rest of the nation.
