Hospital helipads to be lit at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14

HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals will pay tribute to a member of the Wisconsin Air National Guard’s 115th Fighter Wing who was killed in a training exercise on December 8 during an F-16 fighter jet crash in Michigan. This is the same Wisconsin Air National Guard crew that flew over HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, and other health care facilities across Wisconsin, on May 12 to honor health care workers caring for COVID-19 patients.

At 8 p.m. on Monday, December 14, HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals will light the helipads for 115 seconds to show respect for Capt. Durwood “Hawk” Jones and the entire 115th Fighter Wing crew.

HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital speech and language pathologist Amy Dominski, who watched the May 12 fly over from the hospital parking lot, said this small tribute means a lot to her personally.

“It was so selfless of the 115th Fighter Wing to take time to thank health care workers this spring, so now the kind, but heartbreaking thing to do is show respect and give thanks back,” said Amy. “My heart goes out to Capt. Jones’ family and all of his Air National Guard extended family members who are also hurting during this sad time.”

While the helipad lightings are a ceremonious salute to the Air National Guard, hospital leaders and colleagues ask that you keep all Guard members in your thoughts and prayers and, if possible, turn on a light at 8 p.m. wherever you are to join us in this recognition.
