(EFFINGHAM, IL) – The HSHS St. Anthony’s Foundation 10th Annual Golf Benefit held July 20 was a big success.  The event, which evolved through a partnership with Jonathan Kabbes and “Golf for a Cure” held in 2009 and 2010, netted $36,000 benefiting the hospital’s Emergency department.  Proceeds will support heart health awareness and education, along with providing Emergency department communication enhancements.  The purchase of the Responder 5 Staff Terminal will allow care-givers to anticipate a patient’s needs, to respond more quickly to a patient’s change in condition, and to assist with their pain management.

“Holes for Heart Care”, held at the Effingham Country Club, included 136 golfers, 112 sponsors/donors, and 44 volunteers.  The event included many exciting activities and outstanding golf.  Prior to a Noon Tee-Off start, HSHS St. Anthony’s President and CEO Theresa Rutherford welcomed the golfers, thanked the sponsors, and concluded her remarks with a prayer.  The golf event also included a variety of activities on the course, such as “EKG Closest to the Line”, longest putt, longest drive, closest to the pin, and “Hit the Floating Green”, along with information and demonstration booths show-casing St. Anthony’s departments and service lines.  A popular part of the event again this year was “The Challenge.” Six golfers received the opportunity to shoot a 150-yard shot on Hole 18 for a chance to win $100,000 or $1 Million.  Following 18 holes of golf, the golfers enjoyed a reception, the $100,000/$1 Million Hole-in-One Challenge, presentation of awards, and the drawing of the raffle ticket items.

Winning first place was the Schumacher Orthodontics team of Gary Greene, Matt Koester, Michael Koester and Dr. Chuck Schumacher.  Finishing in second place was the Heartland Dental team of John Collier, Blake Lynch, Kyle Moomaw and Brandon Weber.  Some of the other contest winners were:

  • Longest Drive (Men) – Justin Martin

Foundation Leadership Council Chairperson Joe Fearday expressed his thanks by sharing, “We are blessed to have the overwhelming support of our community to strengthen and grow our ministry of healing to those we serve.  We are pleased with the support given to this event, which permits the hospital to have advanced services and state-of the art equipment available to serve the individuals and families throughout our service area,” he said. “We are very grateful for our sponsors/donors, volunteers, and those individuals participating in many ways the day of the event. An idea which originally started 10 years ago as a service project developed by Jonathan Kabbes as a way to ‘give back’ to Effingham has now grown into a full-scale community event.”
