(EFFINGHAM, IL) – In recognition for successful programs to reduce their environmental impact, as well as for standard-setting innovation and environmental stewardship, HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital received the Partner for Change Award and the Greening the OR Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. These awards are two of the Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector.

The Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon programs to eliminate mercury, reduce and recycle waste, source products sustainably, and more. Winning facilities must demonstrate that they are recycling at least 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are on track to eliminate mercury, and have developed successful sustainability programs in many areas.

The Greening the OR Award recognizes the facility demonstrating the most success in reducing the environmental impact of its surgical suites. Operating rooms are large contributors to a health care facility’s environmental footprint, creating opportunity for significant cost savings and sustainability improvements. The award builds on Practice Greenhealth’s Greening the OR® Initiative, which in 2015 alone helped participating facilities save $41.7 million while avoiding 2,150 tons of waste and more than 9 million kWhs of energy.

“We are committed to environmentally sound health care and to ensuring the well-being and safety of our patients, staff and community,” said Dennis Baker, St. Anthony’s Director of Facilities Management. “We are proud of our sustainability programs and their positive impact, as well as being recognized as the nation’s leader in driving the greening of ORs across the country.  It is just one of the ways we live out our Franciscan values of reverence for the earth.”

The awards will be presented at the Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards Gala, set for May 18th in Minneapolis, Minn at the conclusion of the CleanMed Conference & Exhibition.

Along with HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, three other hospitals in the Southern Illinois Division of Hospital Sisters Health System also were honored with awards from Practice Greenhealth. HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville also won the Partner for Change Award along with Greening the OR Award, and both HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospitals in Breese and Highland won the Partner for Change Award.
