(EFFINGHAM, IL) – HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital broke ground on Friday, September 8 on its new Health Center that will house outpatient services and physician offices in a convenient location for area residents.
The Health Center will provide patients with an ideal ambulatory (or outpatient) patient experience by moving outpatient services that are best delivered in an easily accessible setting off the main hospital campus. When completed, the Health Center will be connected to the current Effingham Medical Center (EMC) located at 900 West Temple in Effingham to provide ease of access for physicians and patients.
Theresa Rutherford, HSHS St. Anthony’s President and CEO, shared, “This is truly an exciting time for St. Anthony’s. The construction of this Health Center will allow us to relocate several hospital outpatient services that are located within blocks of each other, to one centralized location and provide residents easy access to a variety of outpatient services,” she said. “As health care continues to evolve more into an outpatient delivery model, this construction is being done for the convenience of those we serve and our physician partners.”
When complete, the Health Center will provide residents easy access to:
Diagnostic Imaging, including X-ray, CT, and Open MRI
Women’s Wellness Center with 3D Mammography, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy and Boutique
Laboratory Specimen Collection
In addition, part of St. Anthony’s Health Center will have office space available for physicians’ offices.
Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) President and CEO Mary Starmann-Harrison shared her thoughts on the importance of this new St. Anthony’s Health Center. “At HSHS, we focus on the continuum of care for our patients – ensuring that we don’t just treat them for one medical instance, but instead we sustain the care beyond one emergency room visit,” she said. “We care about the whole person at HSHS for every stage of their life, which is why this Health Center is so exciting. This new center gives us a more patient-centered, practical approach in which to live our mission to reveal and embody Christ's healing love for all people through a health care ministry.”
In addition to the remarks made by Rutherford and Starmann-Harrison, the ceremony included a blessing of the site and prayer by Father Ralph Zetzl, OFM, Hospital Chaplain. Remarks were also shared by Melinda Clark, CEO of HSHS Medical Group, about how the construction of the new Health Center which will continue the collaboration between HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital and HSHS Medical Group in bringing needed providers to the area. In addition, Dot Behrns, Chairperson of HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital’s Board of Directors, expressed her appreciation for St. Anthony’s constructing the new center to offer more convenient outpatient options to the area.
The groundbreaking ceremony was actually a celebration of launching the third phase of the construction of the Health Center. Construction of the HSHS St. Anthony’s Health Center has already been started through preliminary phases which were necessary to prepare the site.
Phase I: A new parking lot was created on the north side of current EMC, in addition to a new north entrance to the building. The front (south) lot is no longer available as it is needed for the construction site.
Phase II: Infrastructure and life safety improvements were made to the EMC. In addition, some aesthetic changes were made, including installing new flooring and new lighting, and painting the interior to make preparations to match the planned look of the new Health Center before its construction.
Construction of St. Anthony’s Health Center is projected to be complete in late 2018.
