(EFFINGHAM, IL) – May is National Mental Health Awareness month. Now is a good time to remember that you’re not alone. Everyone needs help from time to time. If you or someone you know is struggling, talk to someone you trust. Sharing a problem is often the first step to recovery.
“As a society, when we start viewing mental illness the same way we view physical illness, we’ll reduce the stigma that prevents people from seeking the help they need,” said Executive Director of Heartland Human Services Nikki Quandt, MS Ed and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC).
Access to behavioral health services has been an ongoing concern for the area for an extended period of time. Last year, to help alleviate gaps in behavioral health care, HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital and Heartland Human Services began a partnership with St. Anthony’s providing the funding for a telemedicine psychiatrist and offering nursing support for the program.
Dr. Thanh Thai serves as a telepsychiatrist through Genoa Healthcare, the leading pharmacy and telepsychiatry provider serving the behavioral health and addiction treatment communities for over 15 years. For the last year, Dr. Thai has been offering telebehavioral health services through a web cam at Heartland Human Services, serving two days a week. The need for additional services is such that in early May, Dr. Thai began providing an additional four hours of service each week. Dr. Thai now provides telepsychiatry services on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons each week.

Given the need for additional behavioral health services, HSHS St. Anthony’s also recently expanded their partnership with Heartland Human Services to now include a full-time, on-site provider.  Andrea Cutler, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), is now providing on-site, outpatient behavioral health care at St. Anthony’s outpatient clinic located at Heartland Human Services located at 1200 N. 4th Street. Physician offices may call Heartland Human Services at 217-347-7179 to refer patients to St. Anthony’s Outpatient Behavioral Health Services. Heartland Human Services also continues to offer their outpatient counseling services as well.
