(O’Fallon, IL)  – HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is leading the way withcompassion, quality and excellent experiences for new moms and moms-to-be. Now pregnant moms can get all their “what to expect” pregnancy questions answered early in pregnancy by attending an Early Pregnancy class.
This new class is taught by a Registered Nurse from St. Elizabeth’s Women and Infants Center and is open to any mom-to-be who has recently found out that she is pregnant. Upcoming dates for the scheduled class include Sunday, September 9, October 14, November 11 and December 2, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.
“From the moment a mother finds out she is pregnant, to the time she typically goes to her OB/GYN for an initial pregnancy appointment, several weeks can pass. Moms at this stage often are overloaded with mixed emotions and have many questions about the joy and uncertainty of pregnancy,” shared Julie Brooks RN, BSN, CLC, Childbirth Educator and Lactation Counselor at HSHS St. Elizabeth's Women and Infants Center. “Our goal of offering this Early Pregnancy class is to help moms get their questions answered quickly, so they can relax and maintain a healthy mom and baby during this exciting time.”
According to the March of Dimes, prenatal education is an important component of supporting healthy pregnancies. Prenatal education promotes the maintenance of healthy lifestyles during pregnancy and helps expectant mothers manage stress, support a healthy diet, avoid harmful chemicals and situations, recognize warning signs and symptoms that mean something may be wrong with their pregnancy, as well as prepare for labor and delivery.
“Receiving thorough education early in pregnancy can play an important role in vital prenatal care. Offering an Early Pregnancy class is truly best practice to ensure moms are fully educated about the do’s and don’ts of early pregnancy. In fact, we open our class to all moms from the region - even if they haven’t yet selected the hospital where they will deliver,” Brooks noted.
In addition to the new Early Pregnancy class, St. Elizabeth’s Women and Infants Center also offers prenatal classes on the following topics:  sibling preparation, new fathers, prepared childbirth and breastfeeding fundamentals.
