After a blessing today, the Prairie Heart Institute at HSHS St. John’s Hospital will open its newly remodeled cardiac unit the week of February 17. Colleagues and visitors were given tours of the new space that will be dedicated to helping cardiac patients recover after open heart surgery or cath lab procedures, such as TAVRs, mitral clips or ablations. This renovation is part of a multi-year phased initiative to update key areas of the hospital.

The project added 33 CVCU beds and dedicated more space for family-friendly patient rooms, support areas and nurses’ stations. Front-line colleagues helped design the space to maximize efficiency.

“The new unit will help facilitate collaboration between heart surgeons, cardiologists, ICU physicians, specialists and support staff,” said Dr. John Scherschel, president of Prairie Cardiovascular. “It also incorporates technology that will help us better care for our patients and their families.”

The $16 million project includes a nurse call system with nurse locator and family station. It also features the latest Phillips cardiac monitoring system.

“Families often spend a lot of time in our hospital as their loved one recovers from a cardiac illness. We want them to be as comfortable as possible,” said E.J. Kuiper, president and CEO of HSHS Illinois. “Remodeling the cardiac floor is the most recent step in our continued commitment to provide the best heart care in the central and southern Illinois regions.”
