Low-Dose CT Lung Screening
FINDING LUNG CANCER EARLY
If you smoke, chances are you already have damaged many of your organs — especially your lungs. Prevention and early detection are important. The best prevention is to simply stop smoking, but to find out if you already have lung damage, the Cancer Center at HSHS St. John’s Hospital offers a low-dose CT scan.
A yearly lung screening with low-dose CT (LDCT) has been shown to find lung cancer early, when it is easier to treat. Studies have shown that low-dose CT lung screening can lower the risk of death from lung cancer by 20 percent in people who are at high risk.
Individuals must be between the ages of 55 and 77 and have smoked one pack or more a day for at least 30 years.
