On July 21, 17 individuals from the Springfield area, including eight RNs from HSHS St. John’s Hospital, will travel to southeast Haiti for a week-long medical mission trip in conjunction with Haitian Christian Outreach (HCO). This group will hold medical clinics and paint newly constructed surgical suites and school classrooms in Peredo, Haiti.
Shelly Meyers, RN, BSN, a quality facilitator in the HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital, is the mission team leader. Meyers says her family has been involved with HCO for several years. Her last mission trip was in 2014. She has facilitated the donation of medical supplies through Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach and local physicians since that time.
“Our team members take time off from work and school to serve others,” she said. “Short-term mission teams are not intended to solve the problems of the world, but exposes participants to other ways of living and the practice of medicine. HCO allows people to share their time and talents with those in need. Medical or nursing experience is not required to participate.”
Those interested in learning more about HCO and the upcoming mission trip, including 2019 Haitian mission team opportunities, are invited to attend an informational meeting on Monday, June 4 at 6:30 p.m. in Bunn Auditorium at St. John’s Hospital.
