(BREESE, IL) – HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese has received a five-star overall hospital rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the top score in the federal agency’s ratings system.
The CMS’ overall hospital rating summarizes a variety of more than 100 measures divided into seven areas of quality reflecting common conditions that hospitals treat, such as heart attacks or pneumonia. The overall hospital rating shows how well each hospital performed, on average, compared to other hospitals in the U.S, ranging from one to five stars. The more stars, the better a hospital performed on the available quality measures. Out of the 3,600 hospitals ranked nationwide through this rating system, only 407 hospitals or 11% received the five-star overall hospital rating.
The seven areas of quality outlined by CMS for their overall hospital rating system include:

  1. Mortality

  2. Safety of Care

  3. Readmission

  4. Patient Experience

  5. Effectiveness of Care

  6. Timeliness of Care

  7. Efficient Use of Medical Imaging

HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital President and CEO Chris Klay shared, “This five-star overall hospital rating from a federal agency like CMS validates our continuous commitment to top-tier patient care. We are so very proud of our colleagues and physicians who work diligently to provide this exceptional level of care to area residents,” he said. “As we have for over 50 years in this location, we will continue to provide high-quality, compassionate care to our community.”
Also receiving a five-star overall hospital rating was sister hospital HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Highland. For more information on the CMS ratings system for hospitals, visit medicare.gov/hospitalcompare
