(Breese, IL) – HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese will host a Diabetes Support Group meeting on Monday, May 8 at 6 p.m. in the hospital’s Heritage Room.
According to hospital Diabetes Educator Barb Voss, “Anyone with diabetes or caring for someone with diabetes is welcome to attend no matter where you receive treatment. We always work to provide valuable information, but it is always nice to get together with others who understand what you are going through -- to learn and share.”
The program for this session will be presented by Kate Rivera Kunz, OD, and is entitled “Let’s Focus on the Eyes.” Dr. Rivera Kunz will discuss the importance of an annual dilated eye exam for those with diabetes. Her presentation will include how people with diabetes are at risk for vision loss, how diabetes affects your eyes, and the main types of diabetic eye disease. She will also describe what happens during a dilated eye exam, and answer any questions.

According to the American Diabetes Association, “People with diabetes do have a higher risk of blindness than people without diabetes. But most people who have diabetes have nothing more than minor eye disorders. With regular checkups, you can keep minor problems minor. And if you do develop a major problem, there are treatments that often work well if you begin them right away.

Please register to attend. Leave a message with the number attending and your name and contact information at 526-5743, or email barbara.voss@hshs.org.
