The $9.4 million Outpatient Surgery project includes a 13,880 square-foot addition to house 17 ambulatory surgery prep/recovery rooms, 4 infusion rooms, support space, consult rooms, waiting areas, and a new ambulance garage. The building will also have a new discharge exit with an overhang and a circle drive, so patients will not need to traverse the hospital after having surgery. The project also includes renovation of existing hospital departments including Emergency and Surgical Services.
According to Stephanie Long, SID Director of Facilities Management, the outpatient surgery addition is approximately 70% finished, which means:

  • the buildings are completely enclosed

  • roof and brick work is nearing completion

  • exterior stonework is in progress

  • asphalt and site concrete (sidewalks, etc.) are nearly complete

  • storefronts are ready to be installed

  • drywall and painting are in progress

  • electrical, HVAC and plumbing work are proceeding on schedule

Private patient rooms feature restrooms and nearly an entire wall of windows to invite natural light. The window glass is special – patients can see out, but onlookers cannot see in. Large transom windows are also located above the patient room doors to allow natural light to filter into the nurse station and corridors.
Outside, the concrete of the circle drive for outpatient surgery pickup is visible from the colleague lot, as is the awning overhang. The new helicopter pad located within the walking track has been poured, and the ambulance garage is enclosed.
Charlie Wilson of Poettker Construction announced that Phase II of the renovation of existing hospital spaces will be wrapping up later this month. Projects in this phase include the new central sterile unit, the ER registration desk and on-call physician room, and the OR break room and soiled utility room.
“We are all very excited for this next chapter at St. Joseph’s Breese” said interim CEO Amy Balance. “Not only were the new spaces designed to increase efficiency and patient privacy -- they’ll also provide a beautiful environment for our patients and our colleagues.”
Construction is scheduled to be complete by the end of September to make way for finishing, furnishing and cleaning. The official Blessing of the space and a public open house are planned for November.
