The first baby born at HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Breese (SJB) in 2017 was not due until January 16. Instead, the hospital’s New Year’s celebrity, Irene Grace Kircher, made her appearance on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 2:16 p.m. Irene Grace weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces, and was 19-3/4 inches long. She was welcomed into the world by parents Sheena, nėe Cayson, & Joseph Kircher, OB-GYN Anne Doll-Pollard, MD, and SJB Women & Infants Center RNs Ruth Rainey and Jill Witte.
Irene will go home to Smithboro to join older sisters Izabella, 13, and Abygale, 10, who were also born at the Breese hospital. Irene’s grandparents are Quin and Sarah Cayson of Belleville, Gerri and Alex Baja of Tampa, Fla., and Leigh Ann and Gary Kircher of Belleville. Great-grandparents include Mary Cayson of Trenton, and Bill Gum of Troy. The baby girl was named for her maternal great-great-grandmother, the late Irene Kuhn, and her paternal great-grandmother, the late Grace Kircher.
As the New Year’s Baby, Irene and her family received a variety of gifts, including a large basket of baby items from the hospital. St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary bestowed upon the newborn an afghan and booties, which were hand crocheted and presented by member Dee Morrison. Auxiliary President Roberta Beer gave all three sisters a matching Christmas tree ornament to mark the occasion. Breese Lion’s Club representatives Jim Kueper and R. Joe Richter presented the family a $100 gift card. Irene also received a Dairy King onesie and $10 gift card for her family. The Breese Journal will publish a free thank you ad.
