Volunteer Opportunities

The people who volunteer at HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital are caring, dedicated, and committed. Through their many meaningful activities, our volunteers help further the objectives of the hospital and provide the best possible support and comfort for our patients, their families, and visitors.

Men and women of all ages and from all walks of life presently serve as volunteers at HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital. Our professional staff and hospital personnel rely on their dedication, enthusiasm, and loyalty. Volunteer opportunities at HSHS St. Joseph's are also open to youths (age 15 and older) and to college students. Some activities include:

  • Clerical Services— Provide general office duties such as typing, collating, assisting with bulk mailings, and filing for special projects.
  • Community Health Programs— Assist with the Children's Health Fair and Babysitting Clinics as well as other events.
  • Gift Shop— Help customers with purchases and keep the inventory up-to-date.
  • Information Desk— Welcome visitors, assist with directions, and provide general information about the hospital to guests.
  • Knitters— Knit caps and Christmas stockings for each newborn in the Birth Center. This service can be done at home. Yarn is provided.
  • Mail Cart— Deliver mail to patients and hospital service areas.
  • Waiting Room Host or Hostess— Assist families of patients in Surgery, Intensive Care, Radiology, and Emergency Services areas.

Home Hospice Volunteers— These special people find a few hours each week to give to others and show they care. The majority of volunteers assist the patient and family by offering services such as respite care, help with errands, or companionship to both the patient and the family. All volunteers have completed an extensive training program. Some families prefer to have a regularly scheduled time each week for a volunteer to provide respite or companionship. Others prefer to contact the volunteer or have the volunteer contact them weekly and set up a time when services are needed. Still others will use a volunteer intermittently on an as-needed basis. Bereavement Volunteers— These have additional training related to grief and loss. These volunteers will be in contact with the family to provide support, either in person or by telephone.

Partners of HSHS St. Joseph's— The Partners of HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital was organized in 1970 to promote community understanding of the hospital and raise funds to support the medical needs of the community. The Partners has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to provide sophisticated technology that would otherwise be inaccessible to residents of a community our size. Major sources of fundraising comes from the gift shop revenue, annual charity ball, and Love Lights (See full list below). These functions are carried out on a volunteer basis through an organized board of directors and quarterly meetings. Membership in Partners is open to any interested person at least 18 years of age.

49th Annual Charity Ball

Our Charity Ball has raised money for the hospital to complete projects such as the Birth Center's family waiting area, ICU beds, mammography technology, and the Mobile Clinic.

Charity-Ball-White-Star-Logo.pngEach year, the Partners of HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital hosts THE event of the season — the annual Charity Ball! Known for bringing together the finest dining with premier entertainment, the Charity Ball celebrates community.

This year, cruise on the North Seas on the stately White Star’s Queen. Make sure you and your chuckaboos are on deck for a night that’s mad as hops! Come in your Edwardian era clothing and dance the night away and indulging in a meal fit for the Captain.

The Charity Ball is an elegant evening fundraiser supports local health care in a special and fun way. Service programs at HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital that enhance the well-being of the patients and community have been made possible with the support of people who have attended the Partners of HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Charity ball throughout nearly 50 years. Those programs include the Emergency Service Area renovation, six scholarships per year to local residents, Women and Infants Center renovation, mobile clinic purchase, new mammography equipment purchased, pediatric security system purchased, ICU beds purchased and a Lifeline System upgrade.

The theme of the annual Charity Ball is always as unique as it is elegant: colorful (South Pacific), whimsical (The Roaring '20's), traditional (Ubi Caritas) and romantic (A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation).
