Fetal Non-Stress Testing

Your doctor may request a Fetal Non-Stress Test to check on your baby’s health. This is a common, simple, non-invasive test that monitors how a baby's heart rate responds to the baby's movements.

A Fetal Non-Stress Test may be performed if:

  • You sense that the baby is not moving as frequently as usual

  • You are overdue

  • There is any reason to suspect that the placenta is not functioning adequately

  • You are high risk for any other reason

The test indicates that - at the time of the test - the baby's central nervous system is well oxygenated. Low oxygenation can signal placental or umbilical cord problems or other types of fetal distress. Fetal Non-Stress Testing is available every Thursday. Physician referral is required. For more information, call 618-651-2MOM (2666).
