Green Bay – HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay are the proud recipients of four Environmental Excellence Awards on behalf of Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care.
The Environmental Excellence Awards are presented each year by Practice Greenhealth to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector. HSHS St. Vincent Hospital is a recipient of the prominent Greenhealth Emerald Award and the Greening of the OR Award; HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center is a recipient of the Partner for Change Award and Greening of the OR Award. Descriptions of each award are provided below.
Greenhealth Emerald Award – HSHS St. Vincent Hospital
This premiere award recognizes health care facilities that are setting the standard in eliminating mercury, reducing and recycling waste, sustainable sourcing and other areas. Winning hospitals have demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability and shown leadership in the local community and in the health care sector.
Partner for Change Award – HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital
This award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon programs to eliminate mercury, reduce and recycle waste, source products sustainably and more. Winning facilities must demonstrate that they are recycling at least 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are on track to eliminate mercury, and have developed successful sustainability programs in many areas.
Greening of the OR Award – HSHS St. Vincent and St. Mary’s Hospitals
The award recognizes facilities demonstrating the most success in reducing the environmental impact of its surgical suites. Operating rooms are large contributors to a health care facility’s environmental footprint, creating opportunity for significant cost savings and sustainability improvements. The award builds on Practice Greenhealth’s Greening the OR Initiative, which in 2015 alone helped participating facilities save $41.7 million while avoiding 2,150 tons of waste and more than 9 million kilowatt-hours of energy.
“It’s a wonderful honor for our hospitals to receive these awards,” said Dan Rocheleau, Campus and Sustainability Facilitator for HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center. “This is an awesome reflection of the caring and dedicated work our colleagues do each day. Their effort to ensure not only patient care, but to care for the environment as well is humbling.”
The awards will be presented at the Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards Gala in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 18.
