Green Bay – More than 700 pounds of unused medications have been collected for safe and proper disposal thanks to Medication Take-Back drives at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay; HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan and HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls.
The three hospitals took part in the statewide prescription take-back day on Saturday, April 27 to collect prescription and over-the-counter medications. Colleagues, along with law enforcement, assisted at each hospital collection site.
“Medication take-back events help to prevent theft, opioid abuse and accidental poisonings of children and pets,” said Sue Wheeler, the Director of Pharmacy for HSHS Eastern Wisconsin Division hospitals. “They also protect our waterways. Once we collect the medications, they are incinerated rather than flushed or rinsed down a drain – actions that are toxic to our environment.”
Total Pounds Collected at Each Site
-
HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center, Green Bay: 435 pounds
-
HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan: 245 pounds (An additional 198 pounds was collected at four additional sites in the Sheboygan area as part of an effort led by Healthy Sheboygan County 2020).
-
HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital, Oconto Falls: 46 pounds
HSHS hospitals in Eastern Wisconsin host medication take-back events each year in the spring and fall.
