Sheboygan, Wis. – HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital is pleased to announce it now offers robotic surgery in partnership with the highly-skilled surgeons of Prevea Health.

This month, HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital launched Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci X system, which offers a three-dimensional high-definition (3D-HD) vision system, special instruments and computer software that allow surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control. The 3D-HD image is highly magnified, offering surgeons a close-up view of the surgical site. The instruments have mechanical wrists that bend and rotate to mimic the movement of the human wrist.

While procedures are always performed entirely by a surgeon, the da Vinci X supports a less-invasive technique than traditional surgery. After a surgical site is accessed through tiny incisions, the system translates the surgeon’s hand movement into smaller, more precise actions of the instruments inside the patient’s body. The da Vinci X may be an option for patients in need of a variety of procedures, including hernia repair, gall bladder removal and urological and gynecological procedures.

Patients benefit from the use of the da Vinci X in the following ways:

  • Surgery is minimally-invasive, with reduced scarring

  • Shorter hospital stay

  • Quicker recovery

  • Less pain medication is required

"This is a very exciting time in surgery. We continue to advance our technologies to provide surgeries that lead to improved outcomes, faster recovery and improved quality of life,” said Dr. Christopher Garces, general surgeon at Prevea Health. Dr. Garces performed the first procedure utilizing the da Vinci X at HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital on April 3, 2018.

The addition of the da Vinci X at HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital comes one year after the hospital unveiled a new, state-of-the-art surgery unit with five new operating suites.
