Green Bay – Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) hospitals in Eastern Wisconsin are pleased to announce Rory Groessl, BSN, RN, CEN, CTRN, CFRN, CCEMT, at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, as the *2019 Nurse of the Year.
HSHS hospitals in Eastern Wisconsin include: HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay; HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan; and HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls. Each year, one nurse is chosen as Nurse of the Year. Nurses nominate a colleague from their unit, and those nominations are then reviewed by nursing leadership and the hospitals’ Professional Nurse Practice Council.
“Rory provides outstanding care to some of the most critical patients coming to the HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Emergency Room,” said Ken Nelson, Chief Nursing Officer, HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center. “We are blessed to have him as part of our team and thrilled to recognize his dedication to our patients and ministries.”
Rory joined HSHS St. Vincent Hospital as a paramedic and registered nurse in 2004. Today, he is a flight nurse and provides care to critically injured or ill patients as they are transported to the emergency room. Additionally, he assists with patient care in the adult intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit.
“I have loved my experience working for HSHS since the beginning,” said Rory. “I can point to a number of mentors who have helped me along the way. I enjoy building a quick rapport with patients.”
Rory’s leadership and genuine passion for nursing is highly recognized by his colleagues who nominated him as the 2019 Nurse of the Year.
“I am proud to work with Rory. He exemplifies passion and dedication for nursing in all that he does. Rory is always looking for ways to learn and advance not only his practice, but all those he works with,” said Leah Bergstrom, Director of Emergency Services, HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center.
Rory is a 2009 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and multiple certifications as a critical care and flight nurse. In 2012, he was appointed a coroner in Kewaunee County by Gov. Scott Walker and has served two consecutive terms since.
*The Nurse of the Year for the previous year is typically announced in May to coincide with National Nurse’s Week. Unfortunately, this year’s announcement was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. HSHS hospitals in Eastern Wisconsin thank Rory for his dedication to our patients and ministries, and congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.
