Green Bay – The efforts by HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in 2016 to provide families with donation options and information have been recognized by the American Tissue Services Foundation (ATSF).
Gifts of tissue—which include bone, skin, heart valves, connective tissue and veins—are used in more than 1 million surgeries routinely performed each year in the United States. Tissue gifts not only save lives, but also have the potential to increase strength, mobility and independence for many patients. On average, one tissue donor can help 75 people.
In 2016, HSHS St. Vincent Hospital’s tissue donor program helped more than 1,900 recipients receive the gift of life through tissue donation. The hospital achieved a 41-percent tissue donation rate, meaning tissue was recovered on 41-percent of the hospital’s eligible donors. HSHS St. Vincent Hospital’s sister-hospital, HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center, achieved a 55-percent tissue donation rate in 2016. Its tissue donor program helped more than 825 recipients receive the gift of life.
Colleagues at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center receive training in tissue donation practices from the ATSF and hold donation committee meetings throughout the year.
