Green Bay – HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay recently welcomed high school students from across Northeast Wisconsin for its second Healthcare Bootcamp event of the year. The bootcamp for juniors and seniors interested in a career in health care is designed to showcase the various health care roles within a hospital setting while educating students about how some navigated their paths into their profession.

“Having these high school students learn about the countless job opportunities in health care is really only part of what this bootcamp is all about,” says Ericka Mulroy, RN, BSN, Community Sourcing Strategist at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and organizer of the Healthcare Bootcamp. “Through this job shadowing experience, students are also learning about what type of education is required for these roles, what skills could help make them an ideal match for a particular job and how their guides initially found positions within a hospital setting helping them secure their dream jobs down the road.”

Nearly twenty students took part in HSHS St. Vincent Hospital’s Healthcare Bootcamp on Wednesday, Dec. 28, which included learnings in the emergency department, intensive care and surgical units, and in pediatrics at HSHS St. Vincent Children’s Hospital. Students also had the chance to meet physical therapists, radiology and pharmacy experts, and flight nurses.

“I am really interested in nursing and wanted to see things in action,” said Samara Brown, senior at Green Bay West High School and participant in HSHS St. Vincent Hospital’s Healthcare Bootcamp. “When I think about the way I have been treated and comforted by nurses throughout my own life, I know that I want to be that for someone else.”

Students from the communities of Suring, Pulaski, Peshtigo, Green Bay, Hortonville, Gillett, Lena, Wrightstown, Appleton, Kiel, De Pere and Sheboygan Falls participated in Wednesday’s event.
