Maternal Health Patient Rights

1. You have the right to receive health care before, during and after pregnancy and childbirth.

2. You have the right to receive care for you and your infant that is consistent with generally accepted medical standards.

3. You have the right to choose a certified nurse midwife or physician as your maternity care professional.

4. You have the right to choose your birth setting from the full range of birthing options available in your community.

5. You have the right to leave your maternity care professional and select another if you become dissatisfied with your care, except as otherwise provided by law.

6. You have the right to receive information about the names of those health care professionals involved in your care.

7. You have the right to privacy and confidentiality of records, except as provided by law.

8. You have the right to receive information concerning your condition and proposed treatment, including methods of relieving pain.

9. You have the right to accept or refuse any treatment, to the extent medically possible.

10. You have the right to be informed if your caregivers wish to enroll you or your infant in a research study.

11. You have the right to access your medical records as permitted by Illinois Law and Federal HIPAA Regulations.

12. You have the right to receive information in a language or manner that you, or your representative, can understanding as is in accordance with federal law.

13. You have the right to receive emotional and physical support during labor and birth.

14. You have the right to freedom of movement during labor and to give birth in the position of your choice, within generally accepted medical standards.

15. You have the right to have contact with your newborn, except where necessary care must be provided to you or your infant.

16. You have the right to receive information about breastfeeding.

17. You have the right to decide collaboratively with caregivers when you and your baby will leave the birth for home, based on you and your baby’s condition and circumstances.

18. You have the right to be treated with respect at all times before, during and after pregnancy by your health care professionals.

​19. You have the right, regardless of payment, to examine and receive a reasonable explanation of your total bill for services rendered by your maternity care professional or health care provider, including itemized charges for specific serviced received.
