Simple Summer Eating Tips for Those Picnics and Parties
August 06, 2025
As summer brings county fairs, backyard barbecues, and outdoor gatherings, maintaining healthy eating habits doesn't have to take a backseat to fun. Nutrition experts at HSHS Medical Group Nutrition and Dietetics recommend simple strategies to help you enjoy seasonal festivities while staying on track with your wellness goals.
Plan ahead for success
The key to healthy summer eating starts at home. Registered Dietitian Tracy Dennis said, "Before heading out, prepare as much of the food as possible at home and keep it cold or frozen until just before leaving. This approach gives you control over ingredients and portions before you're faced with tempting fair food options.”
Make smart choices
When packing for picnics or going to a cookout, choose foods that won't wilt, melt or spoil easily in the heat. Adrienne Jarrell, Registered Dietitian, said, “Good choices are fresh firm vegetables (raw or cooked), chopped fruit, whole grains, pasta salad, beans, and trail mix." These options provide sustained energy and essential nutrients while withstanding summer temperatures.
As for those tempting fair foods, both Dennis and Jarrell encourage picking options like grilled meats (chicken, kebabs), fresh fruits and vegetables, and items like corn on the cob or roasted nuts. If you want to indulge, consider splitting large portions with someone so you aren’t tempted to eat the entire portion. Also drink plenty of water which will help you feel full and stay hydrated in the heat.
Keeping a balance is key
When bringing a dish to a summer gathering, consider bringing fresh cut-up vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, jicama, and bell peppers. “They're low in calories, high in nutrients, and they'll help keep you from eating too many chips," suggests Dennis. “Creating colorful vegetable platters with hummus or yogurt-based dips makes healthy choices more appealing and satisfying.”
Summer eating success comes down to preparation, smart choices, and allowing yourself to enjoy the season's social aspects while maintaining balance.
