Nurse Receives Inaugural Daisy Award
May 18, 2023
HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital recently awarded Whitney Thompson, RN, with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's mission to recognize the extraordinary, compassionate nursing care they provide patients and families every day.
“This was the first Daisy Award that was given to one of our nurses at Good Shepherd Hospital. It marks a momentous milestone for our institution,” said Karla Dixon, director of nursing at Good Shepherd Hospital. “We are so happy we could share this moment with Whitney and her team.”
Whitney’s nomination read in part, “I believe that Whitney deserves the Daisy Award because she has always been the type of nurse to advocate for her patients no matter what. Whitney is willing to take care of anyone who walks through our doors, and she puts her heart into caring for every single one of her patients.”
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
Nurses may be nominated by patients, families and colleagues. The award recipient is chosen by hospital leaders from the nominations over the course of each quarter.
