Federal law protects you from unexpected medical bills in many situations. Under the No Surprises Act, you cannot be charged more than your in-network cost-sharing amount for:
- Emergency care at any facility, regardless of whether it is in your insurance network
- Care provided by out-of-network providers at an in-network HSHS facility (such as anesthesiologists, radiologists, or other specialists you did not separately choose)
- Air ambulance services from out-of-network providers
If you are uninsured or choosing not to use your insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before any scheduled service.
If you believe your rights under the No Surprises Act have been violated, you can contact the federal No Surprises Help Desk at 1-800-985-3059 or visit nosurprises.cms.gov.
