Robotic-Assisted Surgery

When you need surgery, the goal is simple: the best result with the least impact on your body. Robotic-assisted surgery helps make that possible.

At HSHS St. Elizabeth’s, your surgeon is in total control at all times. Through tiny incisions, the robotic system translates your surgeon's hand movements into more precise, controlled movements inside the body.

We offer robotic surgery for gynecology, urology, general surgery, orthopedic, and pulmonary procedures. Our fleet - a da Vinci 5, two da Vinci Xi, the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution for knees, the Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy system for lungs, and the HYDROS Robotic System for enlarged prostate - is one of the most advanced in the region.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery

  • Smaller incisions with less scarring
  • Less pain, less bleeding, and less trauma to your body
  • Lower chance of needing traditional open surgery
  • Faster recovery and return to normal life

Da Vinci Surgical Systems

HSHS St. Elizabeth's is home to three da Vinci surgical robots - two da Vinci Xi™ systems and the recently added da Vinci 5, the newest and most advanced robot in the da Vinci portfolio.

Our da Vinci systems are used for a wide range of planned and urgent procedures, including:

  • Appendectomy
  • Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy)
  • Hernia repair (multiple types)
  • Hysterectomy
  • Kidney removal (nephrectomy)
  • Prostate removal (prostatectomy)

Each system gives your surgeon a magnified, 3D high-definition view inside your body and instruments that bend and rotate far beyond what the human hand can do — for greater precision with less risk.

Both systems also include Firefly™ Fluorescence Imaging, which uses a special camera and dye to reveal blood vessels and other critical tissues that would otherwise be invisible to the human eye during surgery.

A Regional Leader in Robotic Surgery Education

HSHS St. Elizabeth’s has been named a da Vinci Epicenter, a designation given to hospitals recognized for their expertise in da Vinci robotic surgery. It means your care team is trained at the highest level and is shaping how robotic surgery is taught and practiced nationally.

Dr. Scott Crouch, our chief of surgery and a Key Opinion Leader with Intuitive, leads live case observations for surgeons from across the country. That kind of peer-to-peer teaching keeps our program at the forefront of robotic surgery.

“These events are aimed at educating visiting surgeons and care teams on the use of the DaVinci platform and highlighting the numerous benefits to our patients in a peer-to-peer setting.” - Dr. Scott Crouch, Chief of Surgery, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital

VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution for Knee Replacement

If you need a partial or total knee replacement, our orthopedic surgeons use the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution for greater accuracy and a faster return to the activities you love.

Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy for Lung Biopsies

The ion bronchoscopy system lets your surgeon reach and biopsy areas deep in the lung that were once very difficult to access while still being minimally invasive. It’s a major step forward in diagnosing and treating lung disease early.

Aquablation Therapy for Enlarged Prostate

If you're dealing with an enlarged prostate, Aquablation therapy may be the answer. At HSHS St. Elizabeth's, we use the HYDROS Robotic System to remove the tissue blocking urine flow, without a skin incision.
