HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese emergency department staff recently received some helping hands for those needing CPR, thanks to funds from the HSHS St. Joseph’s Foundation.

Emergency department staff recently trained on and began using a LUCAS® state-of-the-art chest compression system which assists in offering high-quality emergency chest compression support when needed.

Kevin Schaubert, RN, emergency department and cardiopulmonary manager, explained how the LUCAS chest compression device aids doctors, nurses and technicians providing life-saving care in the emergency room. “While our team is highly trained in delivering quality CPR, there are times that this device can enhance our human ability. The device can do chest compressions for extended multi-hour resuscitations without needing to switch out caregivers, reducing caregiver fatigue. It can also provide consistent CPR when transferring patients from a stretcher to a bed, for example, reducing interruptions in CPR delivery. It also frees up hands so that they can provide other care to the patient and enabling greater focus on treating the underlying cause while chest compressions are continuing,” he shared. “We are truly grateful to the HSHS St. Joseph’s Foundation for this equipment which will help us save lives.”

Proceeds from the 2022 HSHS St. Joseph’s Foundation Golf Classic were used to purchase this equipment for the emergency department. The HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation will be hosting their 2023 golf classic on Friday, Aug. 11 at Bent Oak Golf Course in Breese. A rain date is set for Aug. 25.

The golf event will consist of a 7:30 a.m. flight and a 1 p.m. flight. Golfers will receive a boxed lunch and two complimentary drink tickets. Additionally, golfers can participate in skins, on-course contests and a golf ball drop.

Area residents and community advocates who would like to become a sponsor, enter a team of four, or purchase golf ball drop tickets for the golf classic can register online or download a registration packet at stjoebreese.com/golf.
