HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital and HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Closure Information

Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) in coordination with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services will complete its wind-down of operations and permanently close HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire on March 22, 2024, the same day as HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls.

“While the March closure of Sacred Heart is sooner than originally announced, our decision is based on our top priority: our commitment to maintain safe, quality care for our patients,” said John Wagner, President and CEO.

HSHS is coordinating with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to ensure patient care transitions are well-planned and conducted safely. Staff, local fire and EMS and other acute-care facilities have been notified of the new timeline.

Existing patients at Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s will receive care through March 22, 2024. 

Prevea Health continues to wind-down its Western Wisconsin operations with its last day of patient care to be on or before April 21, 2024, as previously announced; Prevea Western Wisconsin residency clinics and the UW-Stout location are anticipated to provide services through June 30, 2024. 

All HSHS impacted colleagues previously received legally required notices related to the ultimate closure of the facilities, and the change in timeline for the closure of Sacred Heart will not impact HSHS’ commitment to provide severance and career transition assistance.

HSHS hospitals and Prevea Health centers in Eastern Wisconsin, as well as HSHS operations in Illinois, are unaffected and operating as usual.

FAQs

Patient safety is top of mind The last day we will accept laboring mothers is March 15, 2024, and we will safely care for them until discharge regardless of their needs. 
We encourage community members to receive care at other local health facilities. We are working with local emergency services to ensure that all patients in imminent need of medical attention will receive necessary health services. 
There is no immediate change for residents living in our St. Francis apartments. We have informed them that HSHS is seeking a buyer for the property. In the meantime, services we provide will continue during the transition. We will continue to offer an optional noon meal onsite, Monday through Friday. We also are advising residents of additional meal service options available to them, including Eau Claire Meals on Wheels, and our resident manager is available to help them sign up for that service if they choose. Residents will continue to receive other services from Sacred Heart, including maintenance services and common area WIFI.
HSHS, along with your providers, will attempt to assist you with your questions and plans for your
ongoing health care needs.
You will continue to have access to medical records via MyChart for care received at HSHS
Sacred Heart Hospital and HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital. In addition, HSHS will help transition
your medical records to a new facility or provider upon request and completion of an authorization
form or submission via MyChart.

HSHS St. Joseph Hospital and HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital will close on or before April 21, 2024. Most procedures scheduled at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital after January 22, 2024 will be cancelled in preparation for the anticipated closures. Patients are directed to their provider to assist with your transition of care.
