Community Event

Leaders and staff from HSHS St. John’s Hospital and Springfield Memorial Hospital gathered today to plant a tree at HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital in remembrance of the Chatham community and families impacted by the tragic daycare incident one year ago.

Five children died after a vehicle left the road April 28, 2025, and entered the YNOT after school camp in Chatham: Kathryn Corley, 7; Alma Buhnerkempe, 7; Bradley James Lund, 8; Ainsley Johnson, 8; and Rylee Britton, 18. Lund was hospitalized for several weeks before passing. Several other children were injured.

Brian Brennan, CEOStaff at St. John’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital cared for the victims, while Springfield Memorial Hospital sent caregivers, food and supplies to help in the wake of the tragedy.

“Today we are gathered not only to remember, but to bear witness to each other and to the lives that mattered so deeply,” said Brian Brennan, President and CEO, HSHS St. John’s Hospital and HSHS Central Illinois Market.

Jay Roszhart, President and CEO, Springfield Memorial Hospital, agreed.

“There are no words that can adequately describe the depth of sorrow and compassion that we feel for the families who were impacted and lost loved ones that day,” Roszhart said.

Dr. Brock Phillips, an HSHS pediatrician in Chatham whose patients include some of the victims, stressed the need for connection.

“Having an open heart and just demonstrating empathy can help provide support,” Dr. Phillips said.

Karla Marshall, HSHS Central Illinois Manager of Spiritual Care and Mission Operations, reminded the crowd to look to their faith.

“Ask God to show you those moments where our loved one is still right beside us,” Marshall said.
