HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese named top rural and community hospital

April 09, 2026

For over 125 years, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese has been an integral part of the rural community, providing essential, high-quality health care services.

While their service is not done for the accolades, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital is proud to share on behalf of their colleagues and medical staff that the hospital was recently named one of the top 20 rural and community hospitals in the country.

The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) has announced the 20 highest-ranked prospective payment system (PPS) hospitals in the country based on an evaluation by the Chartis Center for Rural Health. The hospitals are identified using the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX, the most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural PPS hospital performance. These hospitals will be recognized May 21 during NRHA’s Annual Rural Health Conference in San Diego.

The determining factors for the top 20 rural and community hospitals are based on eight indices: inpatient market share, outpatient market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge and finance.

“We are honored to be recognized again as one of the Top Rural & Community Hospitals in the U.S.,” said Mandi Ennen, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Chief Administrative Officer. “This achievement is only possible because of the outstanding work and service provided by our medical staff members, colleagues and volunteers. It demonstrates our commitment to providing high- quality care, exceptional patient experience, operational excellence and economic stability for our community.”
