$90 million modernization approved

October 06, 2023

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board (HFSRB) voted unanimously to approve HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital’s Certificate of Need (CON) application for a major infrastructure renovation to update clinical spaces, improve patient room amenities and enhance the patient experience.

St. Mary’s filed the CON application to gain approval for these modernizations in August 2023. With the board’s approval, the hospital plans to begin renovations immediately. This modernization project, an investment of approximately $90 million, will enable St. Mary’s to continue the hospital’s mission to provide compassionate care to its patients and communities. It includes four new state-of-the-art operating rooms with upgraded technologies to increase efficiency for physicians and nurses. Other updates include a redesign of clinical and non-clinical spaces as well as continued expansion of service lines, such as the newly added robotic navigation system for neurosurgery. Renovations are planned through 2026.

“Hospital Sisters Health System and St. Mary’s Hospital are committed to Decatur, and we look forward to starting this renovation that will make it easier for our colleagues, nurses and providers to provide high quality care for our patients,” said Theresa Rutherford, president and CEO of St. Mary’s Hospital. “New operating rooms, a better layout, modern patient rooms: these are all improvements that will directly impact patient care for the better.”

As part of its application, the HFSRB also approved St. Mary's plans to address its current infrastructure and the changing patient population, including razing a portion of the facility.
