HSHS St. Mary's awarded Silver Status for promoting organ donation

January 26, 2024

Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network has awarded HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Silver status for their participation in the national 2022-2023 DoNation initiative.

The DoNation initiative is a national program that works to educate and engage hospital staff and the community about the importance of registering to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. DoNation is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Each year, HRSA recognizes hospitals across the country for their participation in the campaign. More than 100,000 people nationwide are waiting for lifesaving organ transplants.

Kim Menges, St. Mary’s Hospital Gift of Hope liaison, accepted the award of Silver status in recognition of saving and improving lives by promoting the lifesaving gift of organ, eye and tissue donation. Through various activities in partnership with Gift of Hope, St. Mary’s encouraged colleagues and community members to register to become a donor, increasing registered organ, eye and tissue donors in the community.

In addition to St. Mary’s, four Illinois hospitals in Hospital Sisters Health System were recognized for their participation in the DoNation campaign:
  • HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield was awarded the Platinum status.
  • HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham was awarded the Bronze status.
  • HSHS St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield was awarded the Bronze status.
  • HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital in Shelbyville was awarded the Bronze status.
