Green Bay, Wis. – Trauma is the leading cause of death for individuals up to the age of 45, according to the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. In Green Bay, HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Regional Trauma Center cares for, on average, three patients per day, per year. In 2022, that translated to a total of 1,074 trauma patients.

Trauma is defined as a severe injury caused by a physical force such as a vehicle crash, gunshots, knife wounds, falls, battery or burns. The main difference between an emergency department and a trauma center is trauma centers have 24/7 access to surgeons specializing in trauma, and who can provide the highest level of rapid and comprehensive patient evaluation and treatment.

“Those receiving care at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Regional Trauma Center experience increased survival rates, better coordinated care and improved patient outcomes over the long term when compared to treatment received outside of a trauma center,” said Dr. Kyle McCarty, emergency medicine physician and Medical Director of HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Regional Trauma Center.

A trauma team consists of trauma surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and on-call physician specialists like cardiothoracic surgeons. This includes Prevea Health trauma surgeons Maymoona Attiyat, MD; Stephanie Bakey, DO; Cavin Glenn, MD, FACS ; Phillip Mercier, MD; and Charity Wip, MD.

HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Regional Trauma Center is one of just 13 trauma centers in Wisconsin to be verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). It is verified as a level II trauma center, which is the highest ranking a non-university-affiliated emergency center can receive. Many regional hospitals refer patients to the facility for some of their most severe cases of injury. The following are the most common traumas treated at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Regional Trauma Center in 2022:

•    57% of patients treated for falls.
•    17% of patients treated for motor vehicle crashes.
•    7% of patients treated for motorcycle crashes.
•    3% of patients treated for penetrating wounds such as gunshots or knife wounds.
•    3% of patients treated for recreational vehicle crashes.
•    13% of patients treated for other trauma-related injuries.

HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Regional Trauma Center has maintained its level II trauma center status for 25+ years and was the first hospital in the Green Bay region to obtain the prestigious designation.
