HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital treats all people, regardless of their ability to pay. Your charitable donations help us go above and beyond in treating our patients, their families and other visitors who come through our hospital doors. Charitable donations also make up for the shortfalls of Medicaid and Medicare payments, and provides care for many patients who have no insurance or are underinsured. There is no donation too big or too small – and all gifts are valued for the difference they make in the life of another.

Since the Foundation was established in 1986, gifts from the community have made possible projects like the Friends Van, the new St. Joseph’s Hospital, technology for cancer and women’s health, as well as cardiac care, and numerous other pieces of equipment vital to patient care.

Please contact our foundation department at 618-651-2590 or [email protected].

Why give to the Foundation?

Your gift makes a difference.

Without gifts from our community, HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital would not be able to do all it is called upon to do.

Other sources of income are simply not enough to provide quality healthcare to Highland area communities. Changing insurance, government reimbursement policies, an aging population, and continually increasing costs for health care technology make gifts to HSHS St. Joseph's Foundation essential.

How Your Gift Is Used

  • Gifts to the HSHS St. Joseph's Foundation sustain and strengthen programs and services that intersect people's lives at times of uncertainty. Gifts may be unrestricted or directed to any of these major areas of support:
  • Annual and General Purpose Fund - For the Hospital's greatest needs as assessed and identified annually.
  • Program Support and Equipment - Designated for the work of a specific service area or program such as the Friends Van, pediatric equipment, financial assistance, or new heart monitors.
  • Special Projects - Designated gifts to special projects taking place at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Ways to Give

Charitable Trusts

Charitable Trusts

Charitable trusts are another option for donors who wish to make a current or deferred gift to St. Joseph's Hospital but are concerned about retaining an income from the asset. Charitable trusts can provide donors with regular cash payments, current charitable income tax deduction, avoidance or reduction of estate taxes and elimination of money-management concerns. *Giving through such arrangements can be a meaningful way to blend your philanthropic goals with your personal financial and tax-planning needs. Charitable trusts are set up through an outside advisor such as through a trust department of a bank. It is important that you let us know if St. Joseph's Hospital is a beneficiary of a trust agreement so we may thank you and recognize your gift appropriately.

Endowment

Endowment

An endowment is an amount of money that is given to St. Joseph's Foundation with a stipulation that the funds are invested to earn annual interest rather than spent immediately. A portion of the annual earnings is used to support programs within St. Joseph's Hospital. An endowment can be restricted to a specific department or unrestricted to be used for the greatest need. Named endowments are a gracious way to honor an individual loved one or a family name. A minimum of $10,000 is required to establish a named endowment.
Gifts Made Through a Will

Gifts Made Through a Will

You may also arrange for a charitable bequest – a gift made from an estate, after death, or as a result of instructions outlined in a will. Bequests can be of a specific dollar amount, a specific asset or assets or for a percentage of an estate. If you choose to give a gift to the HSHS St. Joseph’s Foundation through your will, you can make your bequest available for our immediate use or you may restrict it to endowment. With endowment gifts, a portion of the investment earnings are used to fulfill the stated purpose of the gift. The proper way to list us in your estate is: HSHS St. Joseph’s Foundation, a division of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, Inc., 12866 Troxler Ave., Highland, IL 62249.
Life insurance

Life insurance

Life insurance donors may designate the Hospital as a beneficiary or an owner of the policy as a special way of gifting. The donor can take a deduction approximately equal to the policy's cash value at the time the gift is made. Annual premiums are also tax deductible each year.
Matching Gifts

Matching Gifts

Matching gifts occur when a Company matches the charitable contribution of an employee to a nonprofit organization. If you (or your spouse) work for a matching gift company, your gift may be doubled, or even tripled. The Matching gift procedure is very simple. The employee gets a matching gift form from their human resources department. After completing the form, the employee sends it along with their gift to St. Joseph's Foundation. (You may also send in the form after you have made the gift.) St. Joseph's Hospital confirms on the form that it has received the gift and meets the company’s guidelines for receiving a matching gift. St. Joseph's Hospital then returns the form to the company. The company verifies eligibility of the employee and sends a check to St. Joseph's Foundation.
