An innovative diagnostic procedure for advanced bladder cancer detection

What is Blue Light Cystoscopy with Cysview®?

Blue Light Cystoscopy with Cysview® is an innovative diagnostic procedure that significantly improves the detection of bladder cancer. This FDA-approved technology enhances our ability to identify cancerous tissues that might be missed during standard white light cystoscopy procedures.

How Does It Work?

The procedure involves administering Cysview® (hexaminolevulinate HCl), a contrast solution, into the bladder about an hour before the cystoscopy. Cancer cells absorb this solution differently than healthy cells. When viewed under specialized blue light, cancerous areas appear bright pink against the blue background of normal tissue, making them much more visible to the urologist.

Benefits for Patients

  • Earlier Detection: Identifies cancerous lesions that might be missed with standard techniques
  • More Complete Removal: Helps surgeons more thoroughly remove cancerous tissue
  • Reduced Recurrence: Studies show a decrease in cancer recurrence rates
  • Potentially Less Invasive Follow-up: May reduce the need for additional procedures

Who Should Consider Blue Light Cystoscopy?

This advanced diagnostic tool is particularly valuable for:

  • Patients with newly diagnosed bladder cancer
  • Those with recurrent bladder cancer
  • Individuals with high-risk factors for bladder cancer
  • Patients undergoing follow-up evaluations after treatment

What to Expect During the Procedure

The experience is similar to a standard cystoscopy, with the additional step of instilling the Cysview® solution. Your urologist will examine your bladder using both white and blue light to ensure the most thorough examination possible. The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient service with minimal recovery time.
