Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. The good news is that when it’s found early, it can often be treated successfully. At HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers, we combine advanced treatments with compassionate care to give you the best possible outcome. Prevention and Staying Alert

If you are at high risk for melanoma — or if you’ve had it before — staying watchful is important.

Protect Your Skin

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
  • Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Avoid the sun during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
  • Remember: UV damage can happen even on cloudy days. 

Check Your Skin Regularly

  • See a dermatologist or healthcare provider for regular skin checks.
  • Do a self-check once a month, looking for any new spots or changes in existing moles.
  • If you have a family history of melanoma, many moles, or very fair skin, you may need more frequent exams and special monitoring.
