Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. The good news is that when it’s found early, it can often be treated successfully. At HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers, we combine advanced treatments with compassionate care to give you the best possible outcome. Whether you’ve just been diagnosed or want a second opinion, we are here to guide you through your care.
Prevention and Staying Alert
If you are at high risk for melanoma — or if you’ve had it before — staying watchful is important.
Protect Your Skin
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
- Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
- Avoid the sun during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
- Remember: UV damage can happen even on cloudy days.
Check Your Skin Regularly
- See a dermatologist or healthcare provider for regular skin checks.
- Do a self-check once a month, looking for any new spots or changes in existing moles.
- If you have a family history of melanoma, many moles, or very fair skin, you may need more frequent exams and special monitoring.
Treatment Made for You
Every melanoma case is different. Your treatment plan will be designed for your type, stage, and overall health.
Your Cancer Team
You will have a full team of experts working together on your care. This may include:
- Medical oncologists
- Radiation oncologists
- Surgeons
- Pathologists
- Radiologists
- Oncology nurses
- Social workers
- Nutritionists
- Other specialists as needed
Your team meets regularly to review your progress and adjust your plan, so you always receive the most appropriate care.
Clinical Trials
Through the HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Clinical Research Institute, you may be able to join clinical trials that give you access to promising new treatments. By joining a trial, you help improve care for yourself and for future melanoma patients.
