HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital invites community to tour new Center for Advanced Surgery

April 01, 2026

HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital invites community members to go behind the scenes during a special open house celebrating its new Center for Advanced Surgery, featuring state-of-the-art surgical suites and sterile processing department. The event will take place Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second floor of the hospital in the Surgery Family Lounge.

Guests will have a unique opportunity to step inside an area of the hospital most people don’t often see, the operating room, and experience firsthand the advanced technology and thoughtfully designed spaces that support safe, high-quality patient care.

“This open house is an opportunity for our community to be part of our journey,” said Tim Layman, President and Chief Administrative Officer at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital. “We are proud to invest in spaces and technology that enhance patient safety and elevate the care we provide, and it’s important to us that we share that progress with the people we serve. Inviting the public to go behind the scenes helps build understanding, trust and connection to the care happening here every day.”

Attendees can take guided tours of the new surgical suites, explore the latest technology and robotics, view educational displays about the future of health care in Decatur, and meet members of the clinical team.

The event is free and open to the public. Families are welcome.

The four, 700 sq. ft. surgical suites and adjacent sterile processing department are part of the hospital’s $90 million renovation project with other spaces such as the renewed Chapel and upgraded inpatient units opening throughout 2026. The multi-year renovation is designed to position St. Mary’s as the surgical destination for Decatur.
