St John's College of Nursing Simulation Lab

The center gives nursing students a realistic hands-on experience to better prepare them for the routine and unexpected events they will encounter in the actual clinical environment as nurses.

Six Clinical Settings

This includes:

  • an operating/obstetrics room
  • an emergency room
  • medical/surgical patient room
  • a pediatric room
  • an exam room
  • a skills lab

About the Program

Classrooms are also available with teleconference and digital capabilities. It is used in every course the college offers to allow students to learn, practice and enhance their skills in a safe, risk-free environment.

Each interaction with the patient manikins can be recorded so the student and faculty can review the practice scenario to learn what went well and what should be done differently in the future. The center helps ensure specific learning targets can always be met.

Mobile Simulation Center

St. John's College of Nursing received a grant in December 2018 from the Renaissance Quality Insurance, Ltd. for a mobile simulation unit to improve the quality of nursing education and impact the quality and safety of nursing care in the Central and Southern Illinois Division hospitals and the Wisconsin Division hospitals.

St. John's College has affiliations with community colleges in the central and southern parts of the state of Illinois. College administration noticed a lack of high fidelity manikins and other health care equipment in the nursing labs at the community colleges of nursing, while visiting to formalize academic partnerships. We want to take our simulation center on the road to these nursing colleges to educate nurses through simulation for safe care. The mobile unit is equipped with high fidelity manikins and associated medical equipment.
