At St. John’s College, our students are diverse, experienced, and deeply committed—often balancing work, family, and academics.

Whether you're balancing family life, working shifts at the hospital, or transferring in after community college, there's a place here for you to grow, connect, and lead outside the classroom.

This page is your guide to the student organizations and activities that make our community stronger, whether you're exploring St. John's College as a future student or looking to get involved right now.

Why Get Involved?

Even without dorms or dining halls, there are meaningful ways to connect, lead, and shape your experience at St. John’s. Being part of a student organization can help you:

  • Build community with peers who share your values, goals, or life experiences
  • Strengthen your leadership skills in ways that support your future nursing career
  • Give back through community health initiatives and volunteer service
  • Support wellness with activities that reduce stress and promote self-care
  • Balance your journey as a student, parent, worker, and future nurse
  • Get recognized for your impact with awards like the Green Cord for peer tutoring and the Silver Cord for community service

Active Student Organizations

Student Advisory Committee (StAC)

Students at St. John’s College can take part in shaping college decisions through a growing shared governance model. Through the Student Advisory Committee (StAC) and junior and senior class organizations, students contribute ideas, represent peer perspectives, and help guide improvements to academic and campus life.

National Student Nurses Association (NSNA)

www.nsna.org

The hub for nursing student engagement, NSNA connects you with leadership opportunities, NCLEX prep resources, health outreach projects, and professional development. Members often attend state conferences and collaborate on campus-wide initiatives.

NSNA mentors the professional development of future registered nurses and facilitates their entrance into the profession by providing educational resources, leadership opportunities, and career guidance.

Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing

www.sigmanursing.org

Sigma seeks to advance world health and celebrate nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Membership is by invitation and based on academic performance.

Membership Qualifications:

Undergraduates: Must have completed at least half of the nursing curriculum, rank in the top 35% of their class, and have a GPA of at least 3.0.

Graduate Students: Must have completed at least one-quarter of the curriculum with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Peer Tutoring

Our Peer Tutoring program connects students with experienced classmates who provide academic support in nursing coursework. Whether you're reviewing for an exam, strengthening clinical skills, or tackling challenging content, peer tutors offer relatable, one-on-one guidance. Tutoring is available in person or through virtual meetings to increase accessibility for all students, especially those balancing work, family, and commuting. Flexible scheduling makes it easy to get the help you need when you need it.

Tutors aren’t just academically strong—they understand what it’s like to be in your shoes.

Most of our events are designed with commuter schedules and working students in mind—think lunch-and-learns, virtual meetups, weekend wellness walks, and on-campus pop-up events.
